Southern Rock

At this time I would like to cover two bands in the genre of Southern Rock.

If you are a fan of any southern rock stylings the following band is a must for you. The name of this band is Pride and Glory, the music that they made is simply perfect. Although the frontman Zakk Wylde is not from the south, you would beg to differ upon listening to this album. With a mix of bluesy driven songs to hard as hard can get this album gives a little something for everyone. The song "Losing your mind" actually starts out with a banjo and then the guitar follows it making an amazing sound. The song "Sweet Jesus" is by far one of the best on this album. It has piano and a great vocal arrangement. Overall, I would say if you don't have this album go out and get it. The album is great from start to finish. The only song I dislike is "Hate your guts". The best song on the album is by far "Machnegun man". After this album Zakk went on to do a solo album and form Black Label Society. If you aren't a fan of BLS or Zakk Wylde period you should still give this a listen. I personally am not a fan of Black Label Society, and I cherish this album. It sounds nothing like Zakk Wylde has or will do again. Unfortunately the self titled album is the only one the band made.

The next band I would like to discuss is called Black Stone Cherry. With their newest efforts coming out in 2008 this band has shown that southern rock is still thriving. Both albums they have put out are absolutely great. Hailing from Kentucky and sounding like a heavy fusion of The Black Crowes and Lynyrd Skynyrd they prove that not every new band has to suck and write songs for 14 year old girls. The best songs on the first self titled album are as follows: "Lonely Train", "Rain Wizard", "Hell and High Water", and "Crosstown Woman". Their newest album holds such greats as: "Blind Man", "Soulcreek", and "Ghost of Floyd Collins". The last song mentioned is along the same lines as the great Charlie Daniels Band's "Legend of Wooley Swamp". Their self-titled album is my favorite of the two, however, the new album is growing on me. All the songs mentioned are defininately worth a download but others on the albums are kinda hit or miss. If your let down by todays music look this band up and give them a listen.

Sorry for the inconveince

Due to recent slacking on my behalf I would like to apologize, and thus post 2 new posts tonight. The first will be that like the previous one. While the latter will be a short list of some unkown yet extremely listenable music.

So, to start things off I would like to introduce a great band that, in my opinoin does not get half the respect they should. The band of which I speak is Faces. The aftermath of Small Faces with the addition of Rod Stewart and Ron Wood. If you are not a Rod Stewart fan you should still give this band a try. They sound nothing like his solo stuff until their last album. Thus, I would suggest to check out their first three albums. In particular their third album was incredibly listenable. As for a song I would suggest their single, "Stay with me" or perhaps "Nobody Knows". Good road music, kinda puts you in the mood when you got three more hours till you hit the stateline and you need a pick me up.

Shinedown has been an absolute great band to me. With strong lyrical content and great musical showmanship this band has really surpassed all expectations in todays music. Unfortunately, I cannot say this for their newest album. Musically its still up there with the exception of the song "Devour", give "Heores" off their last album a listen and you will in fact hear the same guitar riff. Lyrically this album is kind off a stinker in my opinoin. Now to some or most rather the lyrics aren't as important as the groove or backround music, this is whats wrong with music nowadays. Now, had the lyrics of their previous albums not been as deep and as strongly written as they were this wouldn't be an issue. Overall, I actually do like this album. "Call me", "If you only knew", "What a shame", and "Breaking inside" are all great songs off this album. The last one is probably the best one on this album. "Energy" and "Sin with a grin" have almost the exact same guitar riffs. Songs to saty away from are the latter of the afore mentioned along with "cyanide sweet tooth suicide" and "Second chance". The radio, television, or 14 year old sister may have you thinking you like this song, but if you look up the lyrics or actually listen to the song you will feel like a dumbass. Hopefully this band doesn't crumble and become a complete sell out like some many others that taste success.

Now if your into bluesy, folk, or bluegrass music then Old Crow Medicine Show is just the band for you. This band is gaining popularity to the point of making an absolutely terrible album. Their first few albums were mainly traditional songs done up their way, which was very unique. Sometimes these songs weren't so good because of the speedy blugrass effect. Their absolute best song "Wagon Wheel" is almost completely by them with the exception of the chorus which they lifted from legendary Bob Dylan. Their second best would have to be "Tell it to me". Both of these songs are from their self titled album, and the only other album I would suggest would be Big Iron World. This album is more Dylanish and less bluegrassy. "Wagon Wheel" is an absolute must have. You may have heard a cover or eight of this great song, but like most songs nothing compares to the original. Unfortunately, all their albums besides these two really blow. There so bad I wouldn't even give them to my grandmother for christmas.

First Post

Jake Holmes, a guy who is better known as a jingle specialist is a contributor to music history. With the song "Dazed and Confused" he brought passion and emotions not common in the mainstream. Although his original version is not very well known, almost everyone has heard the epic hit made possible by Led Zeppelin. If you haven't heard his version you should definantely give it a listen. Its got a great folky type sound with acoustic and harmonica blaring. Great thing to put in when your just trying to relax and read book or just mellow by yourself.

After a six year hiatus Creed is preparing a new album and tour. This is a band that progressively got softer and tried to sell records instead of focus on music as they grew. This seems to be the norm for many bands nowadays, at least in my opinion. Their debut album was incredible. Every song on this album was very listenable, as opposed to the 2-3 decent songs on their latter efforts. If you hate this band due to their generic pop like sound, you definantly need to give My Own Prison a listen. Songs like "Pity for a Dime" and "Illusion" are unlike any of the songs they gained popularity for. Hopefully their newest efforts will be like those that they started on. Apparently the whole band liked the heavier sound that they had produced on this album. Unfotunately, Scott Stapp wanted to go softer. With money signs in his eyes he quickly learned that when you try to go with the flow you more often than not end up with nothing. A fine exapmle of this is his terrible solo album. If this new album is half as bad as Weathered I personally give up on this band and will denounce all the praise for which I have gave them over the years. Maybe they will fine a nice in between and make songs like "What If" and "My Sacrifice" on this upcoming album.

Now its time for a lesser known artist. Elliott Smith is a great singer/songwriter. One song I would strongly suggest would have to be "A Fond Farewell". This is a great goodbye song and/or break up song. When you listen to Elliott Smith you can actually feel the emotions in which are instilled into his music. Some of his stuff is quite frankly hit or miss with me. Some I would give him praise for all day, and some I would say don't waste your time on. He also did a tune on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. The song is titled "Miss Misery", and its alright I would say its immaculate but definantley listenable. Check this artist out if your into acoustic stuff . Very mood setting style music, goes good with a glass of wine or a bit of scotch. Not really hard partying rocking out type of music.

Point of Being

Once a week I will be posting three different bands and/or artists: one of the past, one of the present, one that is unknown. The goal: to provide some musical know how to everyday person, and to allow for broadening of one's musical tastes. The genres that will be mainly covered are: rock, metal, folk, progressive, punk, blues, with the exceptionally great aray of many others. I will post my personal favorite album and/or song from the artists and points of interest concerning them. GOOD DAY!
